27 Aug PRESENTATION OF THE PROGRAMME OF CÁCERES ABIERTO 2019 IN THE GARDEN OF THE CÁCERES MUSEUM
Today, before the media, we presented the complete schedule of Cáceres Abierto 2019, the second edition of the contemporary art and culture project composed of artistic interventions in public spaces, exhibitions, presentations, panels and workshops.
The event took place in the garden of the Cáceres Museum, where Ana H. del Amo will install a large sculpture in addition to another piece in the Callejón de D. Álvaro alley. She is an artist from Extremadura, whose work focuses exclusively on formalism, where the colour, form and material are combined to create pieces of geometric patterns. Ana closed the ceremony explaining the method she uses, that is, assembling wood and paint from objects she finds and arranges in a three-dimensional setting, offering a range of possibilities in the creative process through pictures, which she will display in the Museum’s temporary Exhibition Hall. She will share this space with Carme Nogueira and Raúl Belinchón for exhibitions related to Las Hurdes, as well as with Rosell Meseguer who will present an extension of her intervention at the Vostell Malpartida Museum. Pepe Buitrago will also carry out an intervention in the Aljibeor Cistern of the Museum, while María Jesús Manzanares will intervene in the courtyard.
Cáceres Abierto is a showcase of 28 art projects that cover a wide panorama of visual languages (performance art, sculpture, art installation, video, drawing, photography, publications, mural painting and new technologies) and that aim to encourage the interaction of contemporary art with the city’s rich historical and cultural heritage and with all the people that we hope, in one way or another, will engage and indulge in this initiative that will take place between 25 April and 16 June.
The event opened with a speech by the Minister of Culture and Equality, Leire Iglesias, stating that “two years ago, we decided to set ourselves the goal of organising this biannual event in Cáceres, a city that has always been enthusiastic about artistic activities and contemporary visual arts. The objective of Cáceres Abierto is to engage new audiences, bring art to the streets and convert the public spaces, the city, the squares, neighbourhoods and cultural institutions into transformative, reflective, and unconventional places that encourage interaction on the subject of art.”
Laureano León, deputy councillor for the Cultural Department of the Cáceres City Council, highlighted the participation of the municipal government in this project, which places the city at the highest quality level in the field of contemporary art within the national cultural scene, as it already is in terms of heritage and music.
Jorge Díez, the creator of Cáceres Abierto who has co-curated this project with Julio C. Vázquez, pointed out that this model and approach is quite distinct from the previous models that were mainly focused on the commercial aspect of art in different variants of the art fair. The goal is to activate public spaces, trying to ensure that art is neither restricted by watertight ideas for specialists nor confined into mere cultural consumption or a spectacle, but that it is significantly open for various social and cultural entities and for the whole citizenry, encouraging participation and promoting the right to culture understood as a public service. To this end, Jorge revealed, that he had advised the artists of the fourteen interventions, the nucleus of this project, to base their ideas on two references: a general one, the essay by Gilles Lipovetsky, The era of emptiness. Essays on the contemporary individualism (1983), in which he talks about the outburst of the “social”, the dissolution of the “political”, the narcissism, the apathy, the indifference, the decay of culture and what the vanguard used to mean; and the other that’s closer to our time and context, La España vacía. Viaje por un país que nunca fue (Empty Spain. A journey across the country that never was),in which the author speaks of a mental state, something that we find in household myths and literature, which is not a region or a country but a state of consciousness. Sergio del Molino will participate in a panel discussion with the artists Gema Rupérez, Fermín Jiménez Landa and Fernando Prats, who will intervene at the Baluarte de los Pozos, the Parque del Príncipe and the Edificio de Servicios Múltiples, respectively. The artist collective La Más Bella will conduct a workshop and create a monographic issue of their experimental magazine with the collaboration of several creators from all artistic disciplines, including the participants of Cáceres Abierto. Escif, who has been active in the street art scene since the late nineties, will paint a huge mural. Maider López will intervene at the Plaza de San Pablo; the photographer Tete Alejandre will present his work at El Brocense Art Gallery, which is related to the first edition of Cáceres Abierto; and Andrés Talavero will carry out his performance about the artist Narbón, developed in the span of one year, at the Provincial Historical Archive.
Cáceres Abierto is also offering interaction with other artistic disciplines and will feature a concert by Rocío Márquez, who will sing at the Vostell Malpartida Museum after the inauguration of Rosell Meseguer’s intervention at El Molino del Museo. A magnificent street exhibition created by Acción Cultural Española (AC/E), ¿Pintas o dibujas? Un paseo por el arte de la mano del cómic (Do you paint or draw? A walk through the art world hand in hand with comics), which integrates pieces of albums, comic strips and cartoons of the most prominent authors from the country, intertwining the threads of various themes and inviting the visitors to create and enjoy their own journey. Three of these authors, Max and Laura Pérez Vernetti, with a well-recognised and award-winning artistic career after working together in their initial years with the legendary magazine El Víbora, with Extremadura-born artist Fermín Solís, author of Buñuel en el laberinto de las tortugas (Buñuel in the Labyrinth of Turtles), will have a panel discussion at the Public Library on art and comics. The closing activities will include the viewing of documentary No escribo arte con mayúsculas (I do not write art in capital letters) about the artist Isidoro Valcárcel Medina, winner of Velázquez Prize in 2015, which will be followed by a panel discussion with one of the its directors, Miguel Álvarez-Fernández and Luis Deltell, accompanied by the curator of Cáceres Abierto.
CÁCERES ABIERTO 2019
Cáceres Abierto is a biannual programme of contemporary art and culture, whose first edition was launched in 2017. It integrates interventions in public spaces, exhibitions, panels and workshops. A showcase of art projects that are both symbolic and practical, respectful of the community and the environment, and reflect critically on everyday reality while promoting public interaction and participation.
Cáceres Abierto 2019 will showcase 28 art projects, of which 14 are artistic interventions that constitute the nucleus of the project, six of which are created by women artists and four by artists from Extremadura who have received the visual art scholarships granted by the Ministry of Culture: Tete Alejandre, Raúl Belinchón, Pepe Buitrago, Escif, Ana H. Del Amo, Fermín Jiménez Landa, La Más Bella,Maider López, María Jesús Manzanares, Rosell Meseguer, Carme Nogueira,Fernando Prats, Gema Rupérezand Andrés Talavero.
Cáceres Abierto is organised by the Ministry of Culture and Equality of the Regional Government of Extremadura, the CáceresCity Counciland the Provincial Government of Cáceres.
